Triad Election
Laundry machines wir in the background. The room is heated by the heat produced by the appliances. “Is not looking good fa Richie” says Maurice Lee, tong lawyer and Richie’s oldest advisor. “As I feared” replies Leslie Mok— the only woman to ever become chair member of the tong. A cutting silence is endured by the two. Richie Rich, the tong chairman, unexpectedly fell ill and is hospitalized.
“There’s been something on my mind. And I am not quite sure this is the right moment to bring it up.” Maury looks up at Leslie. “But when will it ever be” she continues in Cantonese. “What is it?” says Maury. “Should Richie die—” Maurice interrupts Leslie immediately. “Oh come on!” He gets up abruptly. “We need to face the reality of the situation” replies Leslie. Maurice’s fingers trail his chin before turning to face Leslie. “This is highly inappropriate. To start about this when the man hasn’t even died yet”. Maurice flinches as if he wanted to take that back.
“With me many others will” replies Leslie. “I’m already picturing Ting-ting prepare what he’s going to say at his funeral! Mark my words” Maurice trots around the room. Talking goes against his principles, but she is right. “Imagine him as chairman. A disaster!”
Leslie awaits Maury’s reply tensely. “Even if you’re not going to candidate, let’s keep this talk between us, okay? May Richie live a long and prosperous life.” Maury turns his back on Leslie and leaves the laundromat.
